Laboratory Specimen Collection

Laboratory Specimen Collection Guidelines

Chemistry Tests: No food/water intake
1. 2 hour post prandial: Extraction 2 hours after one full meal
2. 75 grams glucose tolerance test: 8 hours fasting
3. 100 grams glucose tolerance test: 8 hours fasting
4. Fasting blood sugar: 8 hours fasting
5. Lipid profile test: 10-12 hours fasting
6. Triglycerides: 10-12 hours fasting
7. Gamma Glutamyl Transferase: No alcohol intake for 24 hours

Immunology Tests: No food / water intake
1. Insulin: 8 hour Fasting
2. Prolactin: 8 hour Fasting

Microbiology Tests
Note: Please call for test preparation

Microscopy Tests
1. Fecalysis: Specimen will be rejected if it is collected for more than 1 hour
2. Urinalysis: Mid-stream clean catch specimen
Note for female patients: If with Menstruation, Urinalysis procedure can be done one week after period.
3. Occult Blood: Fecal Sample collection
Note: 3 Days no red meat intake

Ultrasound

Whole abdomen, upper abdomen, hepatobiliary tree (HBT), gallbladder and pancreas

Light evening meal before the exam (such as soup etc)
Avoid eating, drinking and smoking for 8-12 hours before the examination (Nothing per orem NPO from 12 midnight until in the morning)
Report to the clinic as early as 8:00am
Medications can be taken, if needed, with small amount of water

Transvaginal (For pregnant and non-pregnant)

Empty bladder before examination

Transrectal (For female Virgin)

Do not eat, drink, smoke or Cher 8-12 hours before the examination • Medications can be taken, if needed, with small amount of water
Oral hygiene, Teeth brushing/mouth wash can be performed

Whole abdomen, upper abdomen, aorta, biliary tract, gallbladder, pancreas

The night before the procedure, take an oral dulcolax (as prescribed) to clean your rectum
Empty your bladder (on the day of examination)
No fasting needed

Lower abdomen, Kidney, Ureter, Bladder, Prostate, Pelvic (gyne), Pelvic (1-3 months pregnant) and Urinary Bladder

No Fasting Needed
Drink 4-6 glasses of water or any liquid (such as juice, tea or coffee) an hour before the test to fill your bladder. Do not urinate.
If you feel full or about to urinate inform the ultrasound tech on duty.

Breast, Thyroid, TVS, Neck and OB second trimester

No preparation needed.

Stress Test

Wear comfortable clothes and walking/running shoes
No caffeine intake before the procedure
Caffeine and medications intake should be clarified with your doctor first before the test (it can interfere with the result/interpretation)
If asthmatic or other breathing problems, bring your inhalers and/or other medications.
You may be asked not to eat drink or smoke for two hours or more before an exercise stress test (as necessary)

Pulmonary Function Test

Your doctor may ask you to stop taking any medication before the test (make sure to consult your doctor first)
Do not eat large meal intake before the test as a full stomach can prevent your lungs from inhaling fully.
Avoid smoking and strenuous activities before the test
Be sure to wear loose-fitting clothing to the test. Tighter clothing may restrict your breathing
You should also avoid wearing jewelry that might affect your breathing.
If you wear dentures, wear them to the test to ensure that your mouth can fit tightly around the mouthpiece used for the test

Ambulatory Blood Pressure

24 hr Holter Monitoring

ECG

No preparation needed
Stress Echocardiography
Make sure not to eat or drink anything for 3-4 hours before the test
Do not smoke on the day of the test because nicotine can interfere with your heart rate
Do not drink coffee or take any medications that contain caffeine with out checking with your Doctor
If you have maintenance medicines, ask your Doctor whether you could skip taking them on the day of your test
You should not take heart medicines such as beta blockers, isosorbide-dinitrate, isosorbide-mononitrate and nitroglycerin before the test.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and good walking or running shoes

Echocardiography

Chest X-ray

Important Note:

Be cautious on suspected pregnant patients (may affect the development of the baby)
Always ask the LMP (last day = first day of menstruation)
For Apicolordotic view, ask for the previous X-ray result for comparison
We can accommodate pediatric patients as long as the patient can follow instructions (stand/upright position), since we don’t have X-ray table yet for supine position
